A buyer collects a new car. It has been prepared by the dealer, washed with a sponge and a bucket, and already has light swirls visible in direct sun.
He adds a protection package on the finance agreement without knowing what it is. Eighteen months later the finish looks tired, and there is nothing to claim against because nobody documented anything.
The assumption that is wrong
New does not mean perfect. Transport, storage, dealer preparation and pre delivery washing all mark paint before a buyer ever sees the car.
Why the timing matters
Protection seals the surface as it is. Applying it over existing defects locks them in, which is why an inspection and light correction should come first.
Option one: do nothing
Entirely valid for somebody who is not precious about the finish and will replace the car in three years. Say so honestly rather than selling to everybody.
Option two: a sealant
Lasts months rather than years, low cost, easy to reapply. A sensible option for somebody who wants protection without a significant outlay.
Option three: a ceramic coating
Longer lasting, requires proper preparation and a controlled environment, and costs considerably more. Worth it where a buyer keeps cars and cares about the finish.
Option four: paint protection film
Physical protection against chips on the front end and high impact areas. Expensive, genuinely effective and the right answer for certain cars and certain roads.
Option five: a combination
Film on the vulnerable panels and a coating over everything. The most common choice among buyers who have thought about it.
Inspect before protecting
Paint depth readings, a proper inspection in controlled light and light correction where needed. This is the step dealer applied products almost always skip.
Be honest about dealer applied products
Some are competent and many are a line on an invoice applied in fifteen minutes. A buyer deserves to know what to ask rather than a criticism of the dealer.
Explain what protection does not do
It is not scratch proof, it does not prevent stone chips and it does not remove the need for careful washing. Overclaiming here is common and it rebounds.
Explain the maintenance requirement
Coatings need correct washing to perform, and a customer returning to an automatic wash undoes the benefit within months.
Give a realistic lifespan
With what determines it. A coating in a garaged car doing low mileage behaves very differently from one on a car parked under trees.
Cover the interior protection question
Fabric and leather treatments, which matter particularly for families and are usually an afterthought, connecting to interior deep clean enquiries after spills and pets.
Time the booking to collection
Ideally in the days after collection and before regular use, which means capturing the enquiry while somebody is waiting for delivery.
Keep the correction conversation attached
Protection and correction are bought together, which is the ground covered in ceramic coating and paint correction enquiries.
Capture the enquiry before the car arrives
An assistant that asks what the car is, when it arrives, how it will be stored and used, and what the buyer is trying to protect against can recommend honestly and book it for collection week. The detail discipline is the same as repair quote enquiries captured with the right details, and the booking pattern the same as ai receptionist garages and servicing.
