Two customers ask for the same coating on the same model of car. One quote is modest, the other is three times higher. Nothing dishonest has happened. One car is two months old and the other has eight years of machine washes ground into the paint.
Coating is the easy part. Everything before it is the job.
The components
Decontamination, including chemical and mechanical removal of contaminants. Paint correction, in one or more stages depending on condition. Preparation and panel wipe. The coating itself, by product and durability. Additional surfaces such as wheels, glass and trim. Curing time.
The worked example
Take a family car in average condition with visible swirl marks. A single-stage correction removes most of them, followed by a coating with the durability shown on your price list, plus wheels and glass. The quote is the size band for that vehicle, plus single-stage correction, plus the coating tier, plus the extra surfaces.
Now take the same car with deeper defects requiring a two-stage correction. Same coating, same car, meaningfully higher price, because the labour before the coating has doubled.
Publishing it in that structure is what stops customers assuming the higher quote is opportunistic.
Be honest about what correction achieves
Deep scratches that catch a fingernail usually cannot be removed without taking more clear coat than is safe. Saying so, with an explanation of why, builds more confidence than promising perfection and delivering a compromise.
Vehicle size bands
Prices should be banded by vehicle size, because a large estate has considerably more surface area than a small hatchback. Publishing bands means customers see themselves accurately rather than assuming the headline price applies.
Coating tiers and durability
Different coatings last different lengths of time and need different aftercare. Explaining the tiers, their expected durability and what maintenance each needs lets customers choose rather than defaulting to the cheapest.
Aftercare and maintenance
Coatings perform as well as they are maintained. Publishing the maintenance wash schedule, and offering it as a service, protects the finish and creates recurring revenue from a one-off job.
Customer: How much for a ceramic coating on my car? Assistant: The coatings page shows prices by vehicle size and coating tier, with the paint correction priced separately because it depends on the paint's current condition. Could you tell me the make and model, how old it is, and send a few photos of the paint in daylight? The detailer can then confirm whether a single or two-stage correction is needed.
Photos before quoting
Paint condition cannot be judged from a description. Asking for daylight photos, including a close angle showing swirls, is the difference between a quote that holds and one that changes on arrival.
Packages and mobile work
Service explanation generally is covered in detailing package questions before booking a valet, and location logistics in mobile detailing requests and what to capture.
Quoting from a description
Other trades face the same problem of pricing work they have not seen, as described in tattoo booking enquiries without a design or size and AI receptionist pricing questions.
