Emergency Versus Scheduled Work Questions Handymen Field

Urgent and routine jobs need different prices and different answers. A worked example showing what a call-out actually costs to provide.

A message arrives at four on a Thursday. A door will not lock and the customer needs it sorted today. Another message the same afternoon asks about putting up some shelves next month.

Both are handyman jobs. One of them costs a great deal more to deliver, and most businesses charge the same for both.

A worked example

Say a handyman works a planned day of six chargeable hours at 45 an hour, so 270.

A same-day emergency arrives requiring two hours on site plus forty minutes of travel each way. That is three hours and twenty minutes consumed.

If it is squeezed in, two scheduled jobs move, one of which was a customer who had already waited a fortnight. If it is charged at the standard hourly rate for two hours, that is 90 for three hours and twenty minutes of the day, against the 150 those hours would have earned on planned work.

Charged properly, as a 60 call-out plus 45 an hour for two hours, it comes to 150. That covers the displaced work rather than subsidising it, and it is a perfectly reasonable figure for a customer with a door that will not lock.

Publish two rates and the boundary

A scheduled rate and an urgent rate, with a plain description of what counts as urgent. Security, water, a hazard or something preventing a property being used. Everything else is scheduled.

Explain the call-out separately from labour

Customers accept a call-out when it is explained as attendance and travel. They resent it when it appears on an invoice unannounced.

Say what you can actually do today

Being honest that you can make something safe today and return with a part on Monday manages expectations better than an open-ended promise.

Define what you do not treat as an emergency

A leaking pipe is urgent. A cupboard door that will not close is not, however it was described. Publishing the distinction lets you decline politely rather than argue about the rate.

Route real emergencies elsewhere

Gas, electrical faults, major leaks and anything structural need the right trade or emergency services, not a handyman. Saying so plainly is responsible and protects you.

Use urgency to fill quiet days

An urgent rate that applies only when the diary is full, with same-day work at the standard rate when it is not, monetises a quiet Tuesday rather than turning work away.

Photographs decide whether it is urgent at all

A customer describing a door that will not lock and a customer describing a lock that is stiff are often the same door. Asking for a photograph before committing to a same-day visit lets you see whether it needs an evening call-out, a part ordering or ten minutes on Tuesday, and it stops the urgent rate being applied to something that was never urgent.

Scheduled work is the better business

Planned days, bundled jobs and repeat customers, which is the approach in small job enquiries that handymen can quote quickly.

Landlords generate both kinds

Portfolios produce scheduled rounds and genuine emergencies, as covered in recurring maintenance visits landlords book for portfolios.

Same-day demand is universal

It is the pattern in walk-in and same-day appointment questions, and emergency capture is covered in how HVAC companies capture emergency calls with a chatbot.

Frequently asked questions

Do handymen do emergency call-outs?
Many do, usually at a higher rate, and publishing what qualifies as urgent prevents a routine job being booked as an emergency.
What is a call-out charge?
A fee covering attendance regardless of how long the job takes, which reflects the travel and the displaced work.
Should urgent and scheduled work be priced the same?
No. Urgent work disrupts a planned day and the pricing should reflect that honestly.
