Your Wix site needs human live chat if someone can reply within a few minutes during the hours visitors actually arrive. It needs an AI chatbot if most questions come in when nobody is watching, or if the same ten questions eat your day. On Wix the choice has also changed recently: at the time of writing (October 2026), Wix's help center says Wix Chat can't be installed on new sites, and Wix Smart Chat, which has both a manual and an AI mode, has replaced it.
So the useful question isn't "Wix Chat or a chatbot". It's "human replies, automatic answers, or both, and from which tool".
What changed with Wix's own chat
Here is what Wix's help center says, at the time of writing:
- Wix Chat is no longer available to install on new sites. If you already use it, you can keep it, but it stops receiving updates and ongoing support.
- Wix Smart Chat is the replacement. It has a Manual Chat mode, where visitors message you and you reply from your Inbox, and an AI Chat mode, where an assistant answers visitors from your site's content and captures leads.
- AI answers use Wix AI credits. Credits come with your Wix plan, and the amount depends on the plan. When you run out, Smart Chat switches to offline mode, or you can switch to manual chat around the clock.
- Manual chat in Smart Chat is free.
If you were planning to "add Wix Chat", what you can add today on a new site is Smart Chat.
Human chat and automatic answers do different jobs
Before comparing tools, separate the two jobs. They suit different businesses.
| Human live chat | AI chatbot | |
|---|---|---|
| Works when | Someone is watching the inbox | Any hour, including evenings and weekends |
| Best at | Judgement calls, quotes, complaints, sales conversations | Repeated factual questions your pages already answer |
| Weak at | Nights, weekends, busy days on the job | Anything your content doesn't cover |
| Cost driver | Your time | The plan, plus the time spent keeping content accurate |
| Visitor experience when it fails | Waiting, then leaving | "I don't know", then an offer to take details |
A one-person studio that is at a desk all day and gets five chats a week can do very well with manual chat. A tradesperson on site from eight till six, whose enquiries arrive at nine at night, can't. Our longer comparison of staffed live chat and an AI assistant covers the cost side in more depth.
When Smart Chat's AI mode is enough
Wix's own option has real advantages for a Wix site. It lives in the same dashboard and Inbox as the rest of your site, it doesn't need any code, and it learns from your site content without you exporting anything.
It's a reasonable choice if:
- your questions are answered by pages on this one Wix site;
- your AI credit allowance covers your chat volume, or you're happy for it to go offline when credits run out;
- you want everything in one Wix Inbox.
When a separate chatbot makes more sense
A third-party chatbot such as SpideyChat is worth a look in a few specific situations:
- You want flat pricing. SpideyChat plans are a fixed monthly price, Starter at $9.99 and Pro at $29.99, with the Free plan at $0. There is no per-answer credit to watch. See pricing for reply allowances.
- Your answers live outside the site. Besides crawling your pages, SpideyChat learns from uploaded PDF, DOCX, TXT, MD and CSV files and from Q&A pairs you write.
- You need a paper trail. It can open a numbered support ticket for anything it can't resolve, so a request isn't lost in a chat thread.
- You run more than one website. One chatbot can run on several sites (Starter covers 3, Pro 10), which matters for agencies or businesses with a second brand.
- Visitors write in other languages. It replies in the language the visitor writes in, using your English content as the source. The dashboard itself is in English only.
The catch on Wix is installation. A third-party widget goes in through Custom Code, and Wix only allows that on a published site with a connected domain, which needs a Premium plan. If that's where you're stuck, read why custom code is missing on your Wix site.
Running both without confusing visitors
You can technically run Wix's chat and a separate chatbot on one site. We don't recommend two buttons. A visitor who sees two chat bubbles doesn't know which one answers, and if they're both in the same corner, one can cover the other.
A cleaner setup is one front door with a route to a person:
- The assistant answers first. It handles the repeated questions instantly from your content.
- A person takes over when one is available. In SpideyChat, the "Talk to a person" option appears only while someone on your team is on duty, and they take the conversation over from the Live inbox. Outside those hours it doesn't promise a human who isn't there.
- Everything else becomes a lead or a ticket. When nobody's online, the assistant collects the visitor's details (lead capture is on Starter and above) or opens a ticket for the morning.
If you already rely on the Wix Inbox for other messages, keep using it for those. Just give website visitors a single chat button. Our guide to setting up human handoff covers the rules for when to pass a chat to a person.
A quick way to decide
Look at your last 30 enquiries and note two things for each: what time it arrived, and whether a page on your site already answered it.
- Mostly during your working hours, mostly needing judgement: human chat. Smart Chat's manual mode costs nothing.
- Mostly out of hours, mostly answered by your pages: you need automatic answers. Compare Smart Chat's AI mode on your Wix plan's credits with a flat-priced chatbot.
- A mix: one assistant that answers first and hands over to a person when someone is on duty.
