Service Contract Questions From Pool and Hot Tub Owners

Owners compare a contract against doing it themselves. A worked example showing what a year actually costs either way.

An owner looks at a service contract and thinks it is expensive. He already buys the chemicals, he does the testing himself and it takes twenty minutes a week.

What he has not costed is the twenty minutes, the chemicals he buys in the wrong quantities, the fortnight last August when the water went green before a party and the pump seal that failed because nobody noticed the noise.

A worked example

Say a fortnightly service contract at 65 a visit, so 26 visits a year, coming to 1,690.

Now the self-managed version. Chemicals bought retail rather than trade, perhaps 700 a year. Twenty minutes a week for forty weeks is around thirteen hours. One water correction after a problem, with shock treatment and clarifier, maybe 120. One equipment failure that a service visit would have caught early, say a pump replaced at 600 rather than a seal at 90.

That is roughly 1,420 in cash plus thirteen hours, and it assumes only one thing went wrong.

The contract is not obviously cheaper and it is not obviously more expensive either. What it buys is the thirteen hours, trade-priced chemicals, someone watching the equipment and no green water in August.

Publish the comparison honestly

An owner who sees this makes a real decision. One who is told a contract is better value without arithmetic assumes he is being sold to.

Publish frequencies with what each suits

Weekly, fortnightly, monthly and seasonal. A heavily used pool and a lightly used hot tub need different schedules, and selling everyone the same plan is how contracts get cancelled.

Say exactly what a visit includes

Testing, balancing, filter cleaning or backwashing, skimmer and pump basket checks, equipment inspection and a written record of readings. Owners cannot value a visit they cannot picture.

State what is not included

Chemicals, parts, repairs, equipment replacement and any callout between visits. This is where contracts feel like a bait and where clarity protects the relationship.

Explain the callout position

Whether contract customers get priority, a discounted rate or free attendance. Priority response in July is worth a great deal and is often the strongest selling point.

Offer a seasonal contract

Owners who use a pool for five months resist a twelve month agreement. A season contract with a winterising visit converts them, and it fits the pattern in pool opening and closing season bookings.

Explain the record keeping

A log of readings and actions, which matters for warranty claims and for any commercial pool. It is also the evidence that the contract is doing something.

Say what happens on holiday

Owners away for two weeks in summer are exactly when problems develop. A contract that covers this is worth more than one that does not.

Plans convert one-off work into revenue

It is the model described in pool maintenance plan questions owners ask first and servicing and maintenance plans for garage doors.

Coverage area decides who can be served

Frequently asked questions

What does a pool service contract include?
Typically scheduled visits covering testing, balancing, filter cleaning and equipment checks, with the frequency and inclusions set out in the agreement.
How often should a pool be serviced?
It depends on the pool, its use and the season, and providers should recommend a frequency rather than selling a single plan to everyone.
Is a service contract cheaper than self-maintenance?
It depends on the owner's time and how well they manage the water, and an honest comparison is more persuasive than a claim.
