Somebody locked out at eleven at night has no way of knowing whether a figure is fair. She cannot compare, she cannot wait, and she has read enough stories to expect the worst.
The trade has a reputation problem, and it is caused almost entirely by a minority who set the figure once they hear how worried somebody is.
A worked example
Common jobs, priced the way a customer needs to see them.
Line 1: the call out
What it covers and whether it is separate from the work. Customers need to know what attendance costs before anything else.
Line 2: the time bands
Daytime, evening, overnight, weekend and public holiday, with what each adds. Published, so a premium is a term rather than a surprise.
Line 3: a standard lockout
Non destructive entry to a common door, as a figure or a tight range. It is the job most people ring about and the one that should be published.
Line 4: a lockout requiring a new cylinder
Because it happens, and customers should see both outcomes before anybody attends.
Line 5: lock changes
Per lock, by type, so somebody comparing a change of three locks can work it out.
Line 6: upgrade work
Better cylinders and additional security, priced per item.
Line 7: repairs
Mechanisms, handles and adjustments, as a range, which is the repair work in lockout call outs and what customers must be told.
Line 8: parts
Whether they are at cost, at a stated markup or included, and what a common cylinder costs. Ambiguity here is where customers feel exploited.
Line 9: the honest total for a typical night call
Call out, entry and a replacement cylinder, at two in the morning. One worked example does more for trust than any page of reassurance.
Quote before attending
Always, with the conditions that could change it. It is the single practice that distinguishes a professional from the alternative, and it should be stated as policy.
Explain what would change the price
A different lock, damage, a door that has to be forced or something unexpected. Named specifically rather than left as a possibility.
Publish the payment terms
What is accepted, when it is taken and what happens if somebody cannot pay at the door. It is an awkward moment and it should be anticipated.
Explain why you are not the cheapest
Insurance, vetting, proper parts and turning up. Customers will pay more for it when somebody explains it, which is the pricing openness in pricing and add on questions at the desk.
Publish the identification you will ask for
A legitimate locksmith asks for proof that somebody lives at the address, and customers standing in the cold find it surprising. Saying beforehand what is acceptable, and why it is asked, turns an awkward doorstep moment into evidence that they rang the right sort of firm.
Publish it on the page they land on at midnight
Because that is when the decision is made, which is the capture in lockout calls and what a locksmith site should say and AI receptionist pricing questions.
