Somebody sees two advisers about the same money and receives two different recommendations. He assumes one of them is wrong, or that somebody is being paid to say something.
Neither is true. They are permitted to recommend from different ranges, and nobody explained that to him before either meeting.
The distinction in one paragraph
Independent means the firm can consider products from across the relevant market. Restricted means the adviser recommends from a defined range, which may be one provider or a selection. Both must be disclosed and both can be entirely competent.
When independent matters most
Complex circumstances, unusual requirements, a need to compare widely, or anybody who wants the reassurance that the whole market was considered.
When restricted can be perfectly appropriate
Straightforward needs well served by the available range, a client who values a particular provider's service, or a specialist firm with deep expertise in a defined area.
What clients should actually ask
Not only which one you are, but what range you can recommend from, what it excludes and whether anything in the client's situation falls outside it.
Explain how you are paid
Because the two questions are connected in clients' minds whether or not they are in practice. Answering both plainly removes the suspicion entirely, which is the ground in fee structure questions clients should ask.
Publish your status prominently
Not in a document nobody opens. On the page where somebody decides whether to make contact. It is a required disclosure and it is also a selling point either way.
Explain what it means practically
For a restricted firm, what the range covers and where you would refer out. For an independent firm, what considering the market actually involves. Clients want the practical version.
Say when you would refer elsewhere
Any firm that names the situations it would pass on is telling the client something important about its judgement, and clients notice.
Explain what is the same regardless
The standard of advice, the suitability requirement, the regulatory obligations and the complaints route. Clients frequently believe restricted means unregulated.
Explain how to check a firm
Where the register is and what it shows. Firms that point clients to it look confident rather than defensive.
Explain what happens as circumstances change
Somebody whose situation becomes more involved may need something outside a restricted range, and they want to know what happens then. Saying whether you would refer them, work alongside another firm or review the arrangement means a client can commit now without worrying about being stuck with a range that no longer fits.
Do not let the label do the work
Neither word tells a client whether an adviser is any good. Saying so plainly, and directing them to the questions that do matter, is more useful than claiming the better label.
The same reasoning appears elsewhere
Choosing between a manufacturer route and an independent one involves identical thinking in warranty versus independent repair decisions.
Answer it for people who never ask
Most clients will not raise this and should not have to, which is the same unasked hesitation as minimum investment questions people are afraid to ask, and plain explanation beats jargon everywhere, as in an AI employee explained without hype.
